Training

Summithouse offers stained glass classes on an intermittent basis for both the beginner and advanced artist.  One-on-one training tailored to an artist’s specific needs and requirements can also be arranged. 

 

All Summithouse stained glass classes are held at the Summithouse studio in Lower Gibsons, and instruction is provided by expert local stained glass artists.

 

Introductory Class (Saturdays):  This is an excellent way to find out if you enjoy stained glass artistry, since this class is only 4 hours long, and is held on a Saturday.  This class is also ideal for the weekend visitor to Gibsons and the Sunshine Coast. 

 

Students will be introduced to the concepts of stained glass utilizing the copper foil method through one small and simple project. The project will be based on pre-selected patterns from which to choose based on a beginners skill level, and that can be completed in a half day.  Patterns will range in size up to approximately 6” by 6” and depict a selection of themes.  All materials and supplies including use of glass cutting and grinding equipment are provided by Summithouse; the students need only to bring themselves to the class.

 

Specifically this class includes:

· approximately 4 Hrs. of instruction

· explanation of the basic tools and their uses

· hands on demonstration of glass cutting

· preparing of pattern for your project

· cutting, grinding, fitting glass pieces to build project

· basic copper foiling and soldering of your project how to clean and finish your project

 

No prior stained glass experience is required for this class, just an interest in learning.  Price for this class is $58.00 plus GST.  Class size is strictly limited to 4 people in order to ensure quality instruction.  This class is held on a Saturday during the fall and winter, and will usually be scheduled on request during the summer months as interest warrants, although classes during the winter months can also be arranged.

 

Class Dates: September 16^th, 30^th, October 14^th, November 18^th

Beginners Class (Weekday Evenings): Students will be taught all aspects of stained glass utilizing the copper foil method through 2 small in-class projects spread over 7 weeks. The projects will be based on pre-selected patterns from which to choose, based on a beginner’s skill level. Patterns range in size up to approximately 9" by 16" with various themes depicted. All materials and supplies including use of glass cutting and grinding equipment are provided by Summithouse; the students need only to bring themselves to the class.

 

Specifically this class includes:

· approximately 2.5 Hrs. Instruction each class; 17.5 Hrs in total

· explanation of tools and their uses

· explanation of various glasses and how to use them

· hands on demonstration of glass cutting

· preparing of templates and patterns for projects

· cutting, grinding, fitting glass pieces to build projects

· copper foiling and soldering for your projects how to clean and provide detailed finishing of your projects

 

No prior stained glass experience is required for this class, just an interest in learning.  Price for this class is $295.00 plus GST.  Class size is strictly limited to 4 people in order to ensure quality instruction.  A $50.00 discount will be offered for the student who has already attended the introductory class outlined above.

 

Class Start Dates: October 18^th

 

Advance Class (Weekday Evenings): Students will continue to develop skills, utilizing aspects of stained glass learned in the beginner’s class as well as learn how to work with and incorporate lead came construction.  Students will construct any project of their own choice and detail up to a maximum size of 3 ft. by 3 ft. in diameter and subject to it being able to be completed during the regular span of the course.  This course is spread over 7 weeks of approximately 2.5 Hrs. per class, and also includes all materials and supplies including use of glass cutting and grinding equipment.

 

To be eligible for this class, you must have at least a minimum of 6 months stained glass experience, and possess all your own equipment at home.  Price for this class is $395.00 plus GST.  Class size is strictly limited to 4 people in order to ensure quality instruction.

Registration: Students are taken on a first come, first served basis for the pre-determined dates with payment required prior too or at the beginning of the first class. Classes are limited to 4 people to allow for expert instruction, and one-on-one guidance.  With the exception of the introductory Saturday class, classes usually run Wednesday evenings from 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM for 7 consecutive weeks, although occasionally daytime or weekend classes can also be scheduled on request and subject to the level of interest.
